Prepositions To Follow
The set up crew of The Good Captain, Mike "Three Wheels" Powell, Nifty Nev, Clifton de Castlemaine, in a dimly lit Chateau De Cornerstone, appeared at a loss as to how or indeed when, to start. Barely visible as no one had thought to put the lights on. Enter aged pianist with hangover, and the stage was set for a quiet little toon or three: as it turned out, this first set managed to mangle most of Mr Powell's book, and set an alarmingly high standard for those to follow. I cannot believe we got away with this for so long, but hey ho!
A few more jammers started to turn up, and if the arvo was to be characterised, this was a day for the bass players; Messrs. Moon, Sultanoff and Fforde made a pretty classy set of options. Said aged pianist, now with raging hangover, managed to hand over to Mr Ress who was equally classy on keys; and the usual macédoine of tonsil artistes, twangers, fiddlers, singers, including Kevin, Kay, Jane, Matteo(?), Roger the Welshman, Steve the Fiddle, and the like, who conspired to collectively lower the standard as the day wore on. Keith turned up wearing a card to remind him he was an Artiste, which we could have easily forgotten. And the Good Captain listed an un-named jammer with a Mellophone, which is , as you would all know, in the key of F and is half the length of the F side of a double horn. It uses trumpet fingerings and the lead pipe accepts trumpet/flugelhorn mouthpieces. A horn mouthpiece can be used with an adapter. If your name is None, you are now possibly wiser. Hope he comes again...
With eighteen musos listed, this was an atypically typical jam session: casual, chatty, relaxed and fun. I left, with what was now a thumping hangover, a teensy bit early, as the crew swung into the gathering gloom. Good enough, one would hope, to encourage them all back next week.
